Enjoy Off-Lead Freedom Without the Fear

Do you avoid letting your dog off the lead because you're not sure they’ll come back? You’re not alone — recall is one of the most important, yet most overlooked, training skills. Whether your dog ignores you at the park, bolts at the beach, or only comes when nothing else is going on, I can help.

My recall training sessions are personalised and practical, focusing on helping your dog come back every time — even with real-world distractions. I’ll show you how to train recall properly, how to maintain it, and how to troubleshoot when it fails.

Why Recall Fails — and How We Fix It

Dogs don’t ignore recall out of defiance. They ignore it because:

  • Distractions are more rewarding than your voice

  • The cue hasn’t been trained in high-stimulation environments

  • You’ve repeated the command too many times without success

  • Recall was never properly introduced or reinforced

In our sessions, we rebuild recall from the ground up — blending obedience, motivation, and distraction management in real-life environments like parks, beaches, and residential areas.

How My Recall Training Works

Using the one-to-one format developed in my Personalised Dog Training sessions, we build recall in progressive levels, starting where your dog is comfortable and gradually increasing challenge.

Recall training includes:

  • Introduction or reintroduction of your recall cue

  • Marker-based reinforcement

  • Movement games to boost motivation

  • Emergency recall strategy (for safety-critical situations)

  • Working at increasing distances and distractions

  • Real-life scenario training with people, dogs, and environmental triggers

If your dog also struggles with pulling or ignoring you on walks, we can integrate work from Lead Dog Training and One-to-One Training to reinforce engagement and connection.

When to Focus on Recall Training

Recall is essential if your dog:

  • Runs off when let off-lead

  • Only comes back when they feel like it

  • Gets distracted by other dogs, smells, or wildlife

  • Won’t respond when it matters most

  • Was never trained consistently during puppyhood

  • Has poor engagement outdoors but listens at home

For puppies and rescues, Puppy Obedience Training lays an excellent foundation — but recall training adds distance, reliability, and real-life difficulty.

Key Skills Taught in Recall Training

Name Recognition and Attention
We train your dog to reliably respond to their name — the first step in building recall.

Positive Reinforcement and High-Value Rewards
We use real motivators that matter to your dog — not just treats, but games, movement, and praise.

Distance Work and Distraction Management
Your dog learns to return at increasing distances and in increasingly busy environments, gradually expanding their skill and reliability.

Emergency Recall Cues
We teach a backup, ultra-high-priority recall cue for emergencies (e.g., dogs running toward roads or livestock).

Recall Under Play or Social Pressure
Your dog will learn to disengage from play, chase, or exploration when called — not just when they’re bored or tired.

FAQ

  • Yes — recall is a behaviour, not a breed trait. From terriers to retrievers, every dog can learn a strong recall with the right approach.

  • That’s where we focus. We train recall not in quiet halls but in the actual parks, fields, or walk spots where you need it to work.

  • We can blend in Lead Training if needed. Many clients work on both to improve overall outdoor engagement.

  • Yes — we build motivation beyond food, so your dog wants to return because it’s fun and rewarding, not just for a treat.
