Connor Trains Dogs - About

Author - Ruben Mellor-Clark , Connor’s childhood friend

Where it all began…

To tell the truth, Connor’s path of becoming a dog trainer was likely set in motion before he was ever conceived, his Grandfather was a prison dog handler who trained German Sheperds in Wormwood Scrubs who had passed his strong passion for training to Connor’s Mum and consequentially, to him.

Connor was raised with working line dogs from a young age, brought into the family with a German Sheperd/Whippet, Tara, who needless to say was a high energy working line who required routine, regimented training and care in order to reach her full potential.

The name Connor, derived from the Irish Gaelic name Conchobhar, which directly translates to "master of hounds", a fact that I’m sure was not lost on his parents and, in hindsight, was an apt choice.

Bo and Connor’s Dog Training Career

Connor has always had a love for animals, regularly keeping reptiles such as gecko’s and snakes into his teenage years. While at secondary school, Connor got his first dog that he was able to train from 6 weeks old, Bo. It is at this point that it became clear that he had a talent and passion for training dogs.

‘Bo was probably the best trained dog I have ever met, what amazed me most was she was responsive to everyone, not just Connor, and the sheer volume of tricks she could do’ - Ruben

During this period Connor would often talk about pursuing a career in dog training as part of the Police K9 Unit or Defence Animal Training Regiment. Eventually Connor chose to pursue a career within the Paratroop regiment and enrolled in basic training. It seemed like an obvious choice due to his fierce leadership, organisational skills and fearlessness.

After being medically discharged with an injury and suffering the tragic loss of Bo, Connor’s life came to a crossroads. He could either rehabilitate for the next 6 months and start basic training from the beginning, or return to Cornwall to be with his friends and family after Bo’s death, and pursue a new career path using the discipline and routine he’d learnt towards his true passion of dog training.

Connor Trains Dogs

Upon his return, Connor got to work, starting his own business centred around his passion. The mission was simple, use his unique ability and style of training to reach and assist as many Cornish dog owners as possible.

Throughout 2024 Connor has helped countless owners to understand their dogs behaviour and helped them to reach their full potential. His approach centres as much around changing the owner’s habits and relationship with their dog as much as tackling the dogs behaviour.

Connor isn’t afraid of challenges, or having tough conversations around dog etiquette, and his no nonsense approach distinctly sets him apart from others in the industry. He actively seeks to train in a busy environment with many distractions, creating behaviour changes that last years, not minutes.

Client Testimonials

  • We have re-homed Leonbergers in the past, but never one that hadn't been socialised. With Connors training our girl has gone from an anxious, reactive dog to a friendly confident girl. Connor was recommended to me, and I cannot speak highly enough of him. He is very knowledgeable about dog behaviour and training. With thanks to him, a walk with both of our girls together, is an absolute pleasure.

  • Connor has been fantastic at training not only our 8 month old whippet but more importantly me! He is patient, firm but fair and honest- all of which we need. Bruno is obsessed with Connor and can’t wait for our training sessions. He is a total dog whisperer and given me a lot of confidence as a first time owner. I couldn’t recommend him enough!

    Annabel Evans

  • I was recommended Connor by a friend as was at the verge of having to re-home our adolescent male Rottweiler as he was getting too dominant towards me, having had previous trainers which still didn't make a big impact on this behaviour I had lost hope and anxious to be alone with him. After the 1st session I seen an improvement in Koba and Connor made me feel a lot more confident being able to handle him and what to do when different situations arise. Each session is adapted to your dogs individual needs and making training work around your lifestyle. Connor is very knowledgeable, confident with large working breeds and his enthusiasm for dog training is infectious!

  • Connor is an exceptional dog trainer - friendly, confident, and highly skilled. He combines deep knowledge with a natural instinct for understanding what each dog (and owner) needs to succeed. I have a shepherd mix—a high-drive working dog—who, when we started, was reactive to almost everything: vehicles, other dogs, cats, livestock, birds… Just a few months after starting our sessions, I can now walk her along busy roads and even took her to a dog show, something I never thought possible. This progress simply wouldn’t have happened if I’d stuck with the ‘positive only’ trainers I’d tried before. Connor didn’t just train my dog—he taught me how to handle her, advocate for her, and train with confidence. He’s also incredibly responsive between sessions. If you want genuine progress and a tailored, balanced approach that works, I can’t recommend Connor enough.
